Tank truck grounding with interlocking ground monitoring system. NFPA 77, CLC TR: 50404 and API RP 2003 recommend that the first procedure in tank truck material transfer operations is to ground the tank truck prior to any other operation being carried out by the driver. Interlocking static grounding systems, with ground status indicators, should also be specified so that if the tank truck is not protected from static discharges due to incorrect grounding, the system will not permit the flow of product thereby eliminating the generation of electrostatic charges. The static grounding system should monitor the resistance in the grounding circuit ensuring it does not rise above 10 ohms. CLC TR: 50404 specifies 10 ohms or 100 ohms as being suitable for convenience in monitoring, however 10 ohms would be the established standard for large companies with a good track record in static control safety.

Road tankers LDX 2101 photo road tanker loading stations railway cistern discharging systemsBitumen is an important construction material: each year well over 80 million tons of it is used worldwide for paving, primarily in the construction and maintenance of roads. Bitumen (or, asphalt in U.S. terminology) is a residue obtained from the distillation process of crude oil.

Bitumen is transported to construction sites in insulated road tankers, ideally made out of stainless steel. Stainless steel tankers are stronger, lighter and safer than other types of tanker. Free from corrosion, they offer lower maintenance costs and a higher resale value in the second-hand market.

F.lli Mazzariol S.r.l., Officine Meccaniche B.S. S.r.l., and Bomben Ferruccio & C. S.r.l. are three experienced Italian road tanker fabricators who have used 1.4301-type austenitic stainless steel (ASTM 304) to make road tankers for bitumen, as well as other substances including fuel oils and liquid waste.

All three have recently found a successful alternative to 1.4301 in these applications – Outokumpu’ proprietary duplex grade LDX 2101® – thanks to the efforts of stainless steel specialists from Outokumpu’s Italian sales company. They have convinced the fabricators that LDX 2101® makes an even stronger and lighter road tanker owing to its high mechanical strength, typical of all duplex grades. The high strength allows for considerable reductions in material thickness and, as a result, in weight. The very low nickel content of LDX 2101® (1.5% as opposed to 8.3% in 1.4301) provides fabricators with significant additional competitive edge.

Mazzariol first tested LDX 2101® to make one tanker head, with the help of on-site technical assistance from Outokumpu. Assured of the mechanical behavior and welding characteristics of the duplex material, Mazzariol rolled out its first LDX 2101® bitumen road tanker in February 2007. B.S. followed, completing its first LDX 2101® bitumen road tanker a month later.

* Crossland’s new 33,000 litre bitumen tanker is fabricated from stainless steel, which eliminates the need for corrosion allowance, and extends the life expectancy of the tank.
* With a suitable tractor unit the bitumen tanker can operate at 44 tonnes, allowing it to carry a payload of 29 tonnes.
* The bitumen tanker has a loading temperature of 250°C, and is built to ADR regulations.
* The new bitumen tanker has been designed with operator safety in mind, with all valves being pneumatically operated from ground level, and fully fenced walkways and handrails. Last year the RHA Tanker Group and the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) issued a guidance document aimed at improving safety standards across the road tanker industry. Crossland Tankers have incorporated these guidelines into the design of new tankers, and can retrofit existing tankers to comply with the new standards.
