Computer Controlled 1/2M Monochromator/Spectrograph
The Sciencetech 9057 is a half meter motorized Czerny-Turner monochromator (and spectrograph) with an f/8 aperture. A “faster” model with larger f/5.9 optics for higher light throughput is also available as the 9057F. Both models utilize a computer controlled motorized turret for automatic grating and wavelength selection. The regular 9057 model supports up to three 50 x 50mm gratings whereas the larger optics 9057F model supports up to two 64 x 64mm (clear aperture) gratings.
Electronics The 9057/9057F has a computer controlled motorized turret for grating and wavelength selection. The motorized turret is powered by a single stepper motor mechanically coupled through a direct worm-and-gear drive. Sciencetech’s universal MD-100 stepper motor electronics are used to control the stepper motor. The MD-100 electronics is packaged inside the 9057/9057F housing and has an RS-232 interface to the computer. For USB interface a USB converter electronics module is connected to the MD-100′s RS-232 output inside the 9057 housing and a USB converter driver needs to be loaded on the computer so that it will recognize the USB interface as a virtual RS-232 serial port.
Other Similar Spectrograph Models For high resolution spectrograph applications, please also consider the Sciencetech 9040 Spectrograph. It also has a half meter focal length, but can achieve higher light throughput due to its larger grating sizes of 84 mm or 110 mm. The drawback of the 9040 is its higher price, and it does not have a multi-grating turret. For spectrograph applications, this should not matter.

The SPEX 1680B Spectramate Double-Grating Monochromator/Spectrometer is equipped with two 1200 gr/mm gratings blazed at 500 nm. This monochromator is motorized with a 4-phase stepping motor, has micrometer slits, and an RS-232 like computer interface port with a 5-wire interface using proprietary pin-outs for TTL control of step and direction. This SPEX 1680B monochromator has the following specifications:

For ultimate performance and resolution this monochromator is equipped with the 1679N/X adjustable slits. Calibrated to 100-micrometer increments, they are continuously adjustable up to 8 mm.
This instruments optical layout eliminates relay mirrors between the two halves. Double dispersion attained by two gratings significantly boosts resolution while drastically slashing stray light. This stray light rejection often results in little, if any, loss in luminosity. This is because this instrument permits slits of the double spectrometer to be opened twice as wide as the single spectrometer for the same resolution.
This monochromator will include a sample windows based controller software written with Visual Basic 6.0, National Instruments LabVEIW drivers, and manual. These software options can be used to control the Spex 1680B monochromator through a computer serial port or by GPIB (IEEE 488). To utilize the free LabVeiw software additional hardware may be require from Horiba Jobin Yvon. The figure listed below is an emission spectrum recorded with the Spex 1680B monochromator from a neon discharge lamp using a photomultiplier tube (PMT). PMT and PMT housings are sold separately (please call for more information).

UVM 340 Monochromator Based Microplate Reader
The UVM 340 is ASYS’ latest product which incorporates a Fastie-Ebert monochromator with a holographic grating for easy wavelength selection without the need for filters. Any wavelength from 340nm to 800nm can be selected using one of the software packages that are available for this product. A full wavelength scan of a well takes a few seconds only. The UVM 340 is also very flexible when it comes to plate formats, taking the advantage of the fact that this is a single channel instrument without the restrictions imposed by multi-channel systems.
