The Leaf Filter has two type, vertical and horizontal. Vertical Leaf Filter have wide application. When big filtering area required, in order to discharge easily, horizontal leaf filter is used generally. Leaf filter was used in filtration of bleached oil and fat contented clay at early times. Recent years, after improvement of filter media and operation condition, the leaf filter is used into filtration of pressed crude oil to improve impurities which got perfect reasult.

Compared to vertical leaf filter, the horizontal leaf filter is much more easily to complete the work of discharge residue, which is processed by quick-open disc cover and push-pull device to pull leaf out of tank, so the cleaning of leaf will be more thorough.

The leaf filter have compact structure, which occupy small area. The filtration area of leaf filter is big and operation and maintainment is easy to master. If equipped with auto-control device, the leaf filter can realizes continuity, automatization. As a result, the leaf filter have already been widely used in the separation of suspension material in crude oil.

Oil filter press always be used as a oil purifier in the oil plants for edible oil or biodiesel. This model filter is suitable for filter crude oil and refined oil, and it is also can be used to filter bleaching oil in the refining workshop.

Crude (freshly extracted) oil contains moisture, and fiber, resins, colors etc. from the plant material, which make it darker and more opaque. These materials are removed by clarification – either by letting the oil stands undisturbed for a few days and then separating the upper layer, or by using an oil filter press. The oil is filtered through a cloth and heated briefly to 100°C to boil off any remaining traces of moisture. This is usually sufficient to meet the quality needs of customers and give a shelf life of several months when correctly packaged. However, the oil requires additional refining stages of de-gumming, neutralising and de-colouring to have a similar quality to commercially refined oils, and these stages are difficult to complete at a small scale.

The cyclo-separator is a density separator that converts pressure into rotational momentum to provide the centrifugal force to separate out the solids and oil from the primary liquid. The separation efficiency is determined by the separator’s geometrical parameters.

The cyclo-separator has a tangential feed inlet and two outlets – one for the concentrated solidsin- water phase (underflow) and the other for the clean oil. During operation, the crude slurry is fed under pressure to the separator where the centrifugal force generated throws the heavier suspended solids towards the wall while the lighter liquid moves to the centre. Two vortices develop. The primary vortex carries the solids to
the apex for discharge with the water as sludge, while the secondary vortex carries the clean oil out through the vortex finder pipe.

As the suspended solids in sludge are particles ranging from sub-micron to 100 microns in size, it is difficult to filter them out in a filter press without first conditioning with a suitable agent. As the particles generally carry a negative or anionic charge, a strong positive or cationic charged coagulant has to be used to neutralize this surface charge. Once the surface charge has been neutralized, the particles will be able to flocculate into larger aggregates. It is sometimes helpful to add a second product to improve the flocculation
into larger, denser flocs, which are more easily removed. A high molecular weight polymer is ideal for this. Once the dense floc has formed, it can be filtered off.

ADVANTAGES
The advantages of the combined cyclo-separator and filter press for crude palm oil clarification are:
• equipment set-up is simple and easy to automate;
• short clarification time;
• high solids recovery by the filter press after conditioning with the appropriate polymer;
• solids produced are suitable for composting;
• low maintenance cost; and
• good oil quality.

ECONOMICS
The cost to install the cyclo-separator and filter press for crude palm oil clarification is RM 1 000 000 for a 40 t per hr FFB mill. The estimated payback period from the investment is four years.

MBL currently manufacture three types of filters namely NYB Series Vertical Leaf Filter, MBL Series Filter Press and Filter Press c/w Hydraulic System. The filter machines are fabricated from mild steel plates, cast steels, channels and hollow sections using various processes such as cutting, welding, lathing, grinding, assembling and coating. This filters are widely used to filter crude kernel oil and crude copra oil extracted from the oil seed expellers to remove impurity and sludge content. They can also be used to filter other types of extracted oil. The crude oil is pumped into the Vertical Leaf Filter or Filter Press Machine which filters the impurity and sludge before being pumped to the oil storage tank. The capacity of our filters ranges from 20 tons to 500 tons per 24 hours for our NYB Series and 20 tons to 80 per 24 hours for our MBL Series.

The YLY-250/350 filter presses belong to clarification equipments mainly used in the filtering of crude oil and clean oil in vegetable oil process. The freshly extracted crude oil contains moisture, fiber,colors etc., which make the color of oil darker and more opaque. These impurities can be removed either by keeping the oil settle for a few days to separate the clean oil by gravity, or by using filter press presses.
